Nowhere else, The Readers, Document and Drift: diagram xi, working with architect Dominic Stevens (all 2010), are shown for the first time; alongside Instances, 1999, and a staging of Manifesto 3 (instead of partial object), 2004, in collaboration with artist John Seth, with whom Tallentire has frequently collaborated since 1993, in a practice formalised as ‘work-seth/tallentire’.

Art Ireland: “Anne Tallentire’s New Works”

Nowhere else, 2010, invites the viewer to navigate hundreds of images depicting peripheral glimpses of daily life and detritus taken from sites identified by overlaying a chart of the night sky onto a map of London. This work refigures earlier pre-occupations with interrogating the apparatus of mapping and naming, and plays upon the relationship between the specific and the general; social control and urban occupations.
While much of Tallentire’s work has made use of staging and recording her own actions, in Drift the Irish artist documents solely the actions of others in 21 short video clips that portray various routine activities carried out in association with the maintenance of a city’s infrastructure. For Drift: diagram xi, 2010, Tallentire has collaborated with Irish architect Dominic Stevens to present an eight-screen video installation encased within a freestanding scaffolding structure. Each installation is devised specifically for the demands of the space and identified as a numerical ‘diagram’ in order to emphasise the necessity for a critical consideration of context.

A text work developed specifically for this exhibition, The Readers, 2010, attests to the identities, activities and interests existing alongside the shared day to day work practices of those who work in Irish Museum of Modern Art.

Art Ireland: “Anne Tallentire’s Work To Date“

Earlier works include Instances, 1999, produced when Tallentire represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale in 1999. This contemplates the passing of time in relation to perception and meaning. In three parts, it consists of a video projection which depicts, in real time, dawn breaking over a nondescript city landscape, a series of improvised actions and a single image video loop.

Since 1993, Tallentire has also worked on many collaborative projects with John Seth, under the collective name ‘work–seth/tallentire’. A version of their work Manifesto 3 (… instead of partial object), 2004, reconfigured specifically for the space at IMMA, exploits the ordering and disordering of things and the juxtaposition of action, object and image. This play between image and object is further explored in Document, 2010, a new work that questions the relationship between things and the significance of things.

Anne Tallentire was born in Co. Armagh and has lived and worked in London since 1984. She studied Fine Art Media at the Slade School of Art from 1986 to 1988 and is currently a Professor of Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design and co-convener of the Double agents project based at CSM.

The exhibition is curated by Rachael Thomas, Senior Curator: Head of Exhibitions, IMMA, and co-curated by Karen Sweeney, Assistant Curator: Exhibitions, IMMA.
A fully-illustrated catalogue designed by Åbäke, with a foreword by IMMA Director, Enrique Juncosa and new texts by Charles Esche, Director of the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; Vaari Claffey, independent curator; Rachael Thomas, and an interview with the artist by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-Director, Exhibitions and Programmes and Director of International Projects at the Serpentine Gallery, London, accompanies the exhibition.

The art of the Indian Kenyan Cinematographer Rajeev Jain: a survey and interview with master:
Cinematographer and director of photography training is usually completed through a bachelor of fine arts degree with courses in movie production, computer skills, editing and special effects digital arts. Most cinematographer positions are available in India and Kenya although location shoots often require extensive travelling for long periods of time.
I watch the Academy Awards every year. For me, the high point usually arrives about halfway through the ceremony, when they announce my favourite award: Best Cinematography. Of course, I then will stick around for minor awards like Best Picture, but the suspense is often over. Ever since I was a child, I have always loved the pictorial aspects of the cinema, and the film with the best cinematography is often the film that best fulfils the cinema’s potential as a pictorial art form.
For my favourite category, the Oscars usually reward splashy, spectacular films like Memoirs of a Geisha or The Aviator. However, most cinematographers insist that the art of cinematography is not necessarily an art of spectacle. In fact, if you ask a group of cinematographers (also known as DPs, or directors of photography) to describe their work, the typical response will sound like this: “When people tell me they thought the film was beautiful, then I know that I failed.  Good cinematography is invisible.” Such a response might suggest that cinematographers are paragons of modesty, but they are actually a very confident group, quick to cite Rembrandt and Caravaggio as the distinguished forebears of their craft. So what is it that makes cinematography an art?  
Decades ago, Indian cinematographers defined the art of cinematography as an art of storytelling. Rather than distract the audience with spectacle, the cinematographer’s job is to keep the audience’s attention rapt on the unfolding narrative. This does not mean that style should be neutral. Quite the contrary: the key to the art form is modulation. All stories are about change; as the stories change, the style should change. A well-photographed film is a film that shifts smoothly from comedy to drama, action to romance, always keeping the mood of the cinematography in accord with the fluctuating arc of the story. When no one notices the cinematography, it is because the images have set the right tone for the story, no matter how many moods the story may present. The tools of cinematography may have changed over the years, especially with the wide adoption of digital techniques, but most Indian cinematographers still adhere to the basic principles practiced during the Studio era.

The majorities of cinematographers are self-employed and work on a contract per project basis. Camera operators earn between $27,710 and $79,440 per year. Cinematographers on large budget projects and some television series can earn a million dollars or more per year, however this is the exception.
Career Options
Self-employed cinematographers usually work for production companies, television studios, advertising agencies and independent film companies. A cinematographer’s career options are dependent on his previous work.
In the early stages of a working career, cinematographers typically work as film and video editors, assistant cameramen, cameramen and grips. Usually they start out working on smaller projects such as corporate and training videos, television commercials and independent film projects.
A small percentage of cinematographers work for government agencies and large corporations that have in-house media departments. Typically cinematographers in these types of positions create training and promotional videos.
As a cinematographer works more and creates a portfolio of film clips he may move on to larger projects such as feature films, television series, documentaries and music videos. Working on larger projects may lead to receiving the job title of director of photography. Cinematographers whose work is very well respected in the industry may receive invitations to join the Indian Society of Cinematographers and the initials ISC will appear after their names on film credits.
In addition to working as a cinematographer in the industry some may choose to teach at film schools, colleges and universities. They may work full-or-part time as professors, adjunct faculty or artists-in-residence. In these positions they may teach a wide variety of courses from basic camera and editing skills and screenwriting to advising students of thesis film projects.
Responsibilities
the cinematographer is ultimately responsible for how the movie looks. Responsibilities may vary with every project but typically include meeting with the director and perhaps the scriptwriter to assimilate the vision and feeling of the story. They are also responsible for locating and securing archival footage for the project and communicating with the director how he or she sees the project.

I just instructed a self defense seminar in NYC and it was interesting to note certain folk’s response to being systematically shown how to use the tool of violence for survival.

The competitors in a combat sports event are hampered by agreed upon rules. Therefore they rely on developed athletic skills (being bigger, faster, stronger) in order to better the other guy and win the competition.

Then I showed them grisly photos of prisoners in a fight who were cut numerous times, right down to the bone. These prisoners not only survived the attacks — they killed their ‘attackers’.This totally went against the knife-fighting expert’s claims.

I then showed two other video clips, back to back, of prisoners ’shanking’ (using an improvised stabbing tool) another prisoner until they killed the victim. Again this looked nothing like the nice back-and-forth technique the ‘knife-fighter’ showed in his impressive demo.

When I was finished there was dead silence. I had made my point and the rest of the time we had 100% complete focus.

I wasn’t able to show this recent class the videos and it showed. Some people didn’t ‘get it’ until the last day when we do ‘Grabs, Punches, Holds and Chokes’.

That’s when they see how much simpler it is to use violence rather than try a ‘give and take’ approach.
